Author’s Note: There is a backstory to this. My older twin selected St. Kateri Tekakwitha as her Confirmation patron before St. Kateri’s canonization. One of the requests my child made was that we visit the shrine as part of her graduation. This poem and another are a result of that visit.
I have no gift that I can bring
Except some simple words
Of love and light and truth
You lived upon the earth.
Mercy, grace, forgiveness
Freely given to your abusers.
At death your inner beauty
Was painted by our Father on your brow.
Lily of the Mohawks
With child-like faith
Lead my child with living simplicity.
